The slogan for the town is “The Model City”, which comes from the fact that it began life in 1872 as a planned community built by the Woodstock Iron Company. Iron, steel, and clay pipe were in the town’s blood – but it also became known as a health resort, with its towering forests and fresh mountain air. As a result, several hotels began to operate in the vicinity and people came from far and wide for the invigorating experience. Today, as the county seat of Calhoun County, the City of Anniston is at the center of local industry and commerce with a population of more than 22,000 residents.
