Aviation View - September 2024

AECOM collaborated with Winchester Regional Airport Authority (WRAA) for two years to deliver a state-of-the-art design for their new 16,000 square foot general aviation terminal. By engaging WRAA in the design process, program requirements, functionality, spatial relationships, and aesthetics of the terminal, the relationship became a joint venture, which successful projects require. The new terminal building is inspired by the character of the Shenandoah Region by employing elements such as tree-like columns and overhang supports which pay homage to the apple orchards of the region. The new terminal is grounded in the region’s history and heritage in terms of material and color palettes, while introducing an authentic architectural language that is capable of accommodating both the region’s unique characteristics and cutting-edge technology of the modern aviation terminal. An example of this technology is the use of a two-story curtainwall system to harvest natural daylight and promote energy conservation paired with a lighting control system to minimize the use of artificial lighting, cool roof technology, and environmentally friendly materials. The terminal is designed to serve as a community centerpiece by incorporating spaces such as an observation gallery, business center, and tenant spaces to advance aviation education, training and flight certification, house the local chamber of commerce, and create an environment that knits the facility and community together. Our broad expertise spans the entire aviation life cycle – from master planning and architecture to program management, engineering, and sustainability – allowing us to bring unique solutions to the landside, terminal, and airside projects. Winchester Regional Airport is the future of air travel. History and community come together with a new state-of-the-art terminal that highlights the beauty and culture of Winchester and Shenandoah Valley.
